Choosing a wedding florist

Jan 31st, 2010

How to choose “The Perfect Florist” for your wedding?

Choosing the right florist to look after your wedding flowers is one of the most important decisions you will make regarding the flowers on your big day.

If you know of a florist who’s work you like and you’re getting married, well than you’re lucky and you’re halfway there.

But for many Brides-to-be it’s not that easy.

We’ve put together some tips to consider making sure you choose the right florist.

Some questions you should ask yourself first:

  • What flowers do I like best?
  • What will be the Theme/Style of my wedding?
  • What colour scheme will be used at my wedding?
  • What budget do I have for my flowers?
  • Do I see flowers to be an important part of my wedding day?

In order to choose the right florist and pick flowers that totally represent you on the day it is advisable to start collecting lots of photos of bouquets, church flowers and reception flowers before you choose your florist.  Collect lots of photos from wedding and lifestyle magazines, websites, etc..  Use a scrap book to collect all your photos.  Don’t be to worried about the fact if these flowers are in season, the main purpose of these photos is first of all to develop a clearer view for you of what you like and when you are ready to talk to a florist this will be a valuable help for the florist to learn your personal style.

After you have spent some time finding out what you would expect from your wedding flowers, it is time to choose two or three florist for you to visit.

  • Ask your friends and family for recommendations.
  • Contact your hotel, reception location and wedding coordinator for recommendations.
  • What are the Florists qualifications?
  • What experience do they have?
  • Are they reliable, do they have shop premises?
  • Do I like the wedding bouquets and arrangements they show on their website?
  • Do I like the style of floristry in their shop?

If you can, it is best to visit the florists of your choice to see their premises their work and find out what their service is like on a normal day.  In most flower shops it is best to make an appointment to visit and discuss your floral requirements, as you want the florist to have time to discuss all options with you.

When you are talking to a florist about your wedding flowers make sure that;

  • They give you plenty of time.
  • They ask you lots of questions to find out what you really like.
  • After listening to you they come up with some suggestions.
  • They don’t immediately suggest wedding package A, B or C.  This is often an excuse not to have to listen to what are the perfect flowers for you.  After all every bride is different, and your flowers should be “you”
  • They offer to send you a detailed proposal of what you discussed with all items priced individually so you can review all this at your leisure.

At this point we suggest that you trust on your intuition.  Which of the florists gave you the feeling that:

  • They understand you and what flowers you like best
  • They will produce top quality on the day
  • They Are capable of executing what they promise
  • They will give you time to finalize details of your wedding flowers
  • You will get on with them over the next while leading up to your wedding day

Now we are sure that you are ready to choose the right florist…for you.

Often it takes two or three meetings with your florist before you come to the perfect floral displays for your wedding.

At this point a florist will often ask for a deposit to keep the day free for you.  This is a good thing as you do not want a florist that takes as many weddings as possible on one day and than turns to mass production.

We hope that these tips will help you making your wedding day as special as it should be.

Valentines day approaches

Jan 30th, 2010

Are you ready for Valentines?

Its just over 2 weeks to 14th February – Valentines Day – have you thought about what you will be doing that day?

Valentines is on Sunday this year, so chances are that you will be making the most of a night out on the Saturday and a lay in on the Sunday.

The most popular gift to give on Valentines is a Valentines Card, the 2nd most popular gifts to give are Red Roses.

A single red rose, presented in a stylish wrap of cellophane or maybe a presentation box, or half a dozen, or a dozen red roses made up in a hand tied aqua pack for freshness.  Other flowers to give maybe a fabulous dozen roses in a black vase with palm leaves, or maybe a tall swirl vase with a single red rose and twirled bamboo.

A sweatheart vase, arranged with a single rose in the centre and then accompanied by a selection of complimentary flowers.   Red tulips make an excellent alternative to roses made up in an arrangement.

Any of these accompanied by a box of chocolates or a Teddy Bear or even a Valentines Balloon, of even a teddy ‘holding’ a fresh red rose?

Whatever you choose to send to your Valentine, when it comes from Flower Angels you can be rest assured that it will be fresh and of excellent quality.

Remember!!!

Not all roses are of the same quality.  Yes you can get a dozen red roses for £20 from places such as Next, we could sell them too but we don’t because the quality is not good.  But for good quality roses like ours from places such as Next you are looking at £60 plus postage!!!

When choosing your florist to order your Valentines flowers , ask the florist what roses you will be getting, if the florist cannot tell you the name of the roses that they will be using, then it will most likely that their roses will be a lower quality rose.

Our red roses are only the best quality ‘Passion’

At Flower Angels, all of our red roses are top quality Dutch roses, ‘Passion’ now thats aptly named for Valentines!  Their colouring is a rich red, and the heads of the rose are just a nice size, just what you would expect from Flower Angels, good quality roses.

Ordering

When you are ready to put your order in, you can either order online or give us a call on 0191 549 6799 or 0191 567 3737.

Disaster strikes deliveries!

Jan 7th, 2010

Disaster!!!

You know how it is, snow falls, it melts, it freezes, more snow falls, the roads get icey and slippery.  The traffic builds up, you get the odd idiot who decides that they are immune to the effects of the snow and drives like a bat out of hell.  Well all of this and (touch wood) our delivery vans have survived …..so far….of any accidents bar a minor scrape.

BUT….what you don’t expect is for the delivery driver to fill up a DIESEL delivery van, that he has filled up the same van with fuel many times before, with PETROL!!!!!!!

Let me tell you, petrol in a common rail diesel engine is an instant recipe for disaster.  New fuels pumps and more or less as engine rebuild.  Its not covered by insurance either!!!

All the hard work at Christmas, more than wiped out by one stupid mistake.  And, insult to injury is to have a delivery vehicle off the road during some of the worst weather we have seen, putting more pressure on our other delivery van.

All i can say is thank you to to Ian at Monkwearmouth Motor Company in Sunderland for sorting out the van in good time.

Christmas decorations

Dec 13th, 2009

Well….what a day today!

Firstly, up at the crack of dawn and making up the buffet food for my Nephew ‘Mason’s’ Christening reception at the New Derby in Roker.  There was allsorts of food on the menu, and all of it was lush!

Once the buffet was done, time to blow up the balloons for decorations, then off to the Derby to set it all up.  Just in time to pop home for Anita and myself to have a quick shower, then get down to the church for the service.

Then it was time for our Christmas decorations to go up at last!!!    Tree is up!!!  tinsel, baubles, nativity scene!!! wooooooooo!!!!

At least we can sit down eventually today, after a crazy weekend.  God how i hate and love Christmas !!!!!!!

Holly Wreaths and Holly Crosses

Dec 6th, 2009

Holly wreaths are now being made up freshly to order ready for Christmas!

You will not find any bulk made up, bought in, cheap holly wreaths at Flower Angels.   Unlike a lot of other florists we make up our own holly wreaths from sustainable locally sourced produce.

We make 10 and 12 inch holly wreaths and also 18 inch holly crosses.
Each wreath has a base of Sphagnum moss, built up with a generous layer of luxurious Nordmann Fir.  Then beautiful fresh holly adorns the final layer of the holly wreath or holly cross. Each Holly wreath is finished with a luxury organza ribbon bow.

Any of our holly wreaths or holly crosses can be decorated in a colour scheme of your choice, you just need to ask!

We have made up a selection to give you an idea of what can be achieved, so please take a look and let us know what you think.

Icey morning in Sunderland

Dec 1st, 2009

Today is the first icey morning, -3c. So had to defrost the van and car this morning :(
Thick of ice on the windows, freezing hands, need to buy a pair of gloves, also a freezing cold head, need a hat to!

Guess it is a visit to Halfords or the pound shop to buy a couple of scrapers, and some deicer, the credit card doesn’t quite work very well to scrape the ice of the windows!!!

Although it was quite amusing seeing other people scraping their cars, seeing their twisted, red, flushed faces :)

Funeral Tributes

Nov 29th, 2009

Every family, will at some point in their lives, experience the devastation of the loss of a loved one.  We hope the following information will be of help to you, regretfully when that time comes.

Organising funeral flowers

Organising funeral flowers is an emotional time and can be extremely stressful for anyone.  Many people are not ready to deal with this and will leave funeral flowers to the Funeral Directors to organise for them.  We feel that visiting a florist (such as ourselves, Flower Angels) directly is a much better option, as we work with you to find what you actually want, with no hard sells.

Home visits

If you feel that going out to the florist shop will be difficult for you, for your convenience, if you wish, we can also visit your home allowing you to talk through your needs with a florist who would be making up your tributes.

What tribute should i send?

Each person has their own idea of what would be the most appropriate funeral tribute.  As a general rule of thumb, the most appropriate funeral tribute is the tribute that YOU want to send.  Not something that is ‘expected’, it comes from your heart.

Traditional tributes

We offer a full range of traditional funeral tributes, everything ranging from;

Posies, Wreaths, Book, Crosses, Coffin Sprays, Hearts, Cushions, Pillows, Oasis Sprays, Sheaf’s, Single Stems, Flat Sprays, Baskets

Word tributes, including;

‘MAM’, ‘DAD’, ‘SON’, ‘DAUGHTER’, BROTHER, SISTER etc

Speciality funeral tributes, including (but not a complete list!);

Anchor, Angel, Teddy Bear, Football on pitch, Pint of Beer, Football Shirt, Gates of Heaven, Butterfly, Star, Horse Shoe, Motorbike

Custom tributes (example of our previous work);

Bus, Plane, Drum kit, Golf clubs, Tea Cup and Saucer, Playing Card, Dog, Rabbit
